X Abides By Supreme Court Orders : Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has made a significant shift in its approach to the Brazilian Supreme Court, stating it has complied with orders to curb misinformation and is now seeking to lift a ban on its services. This move marks a notable retreat for the billionaire, who has previously positioned himself as a staunch defender of free speech and an opponent of “censorship.”
As the court deliberates on X’s potential reinstatement, sources close to Musk in Brazil believe that the platform could be back up and running in just a few days. This request to resume operations comes after a series of conciliatory gestures from X, signaling a dramatic turn in Musk’s ongoing clash with Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
X Faced Shutdown Earlier
The conflict escalated in late August when de Moraes ordered the shutdown of X in Brazil, a move that disrupted access for millions of users in one of the platform’s largest markets. This judicial action followed Musk’s controversial decision to close X’s offices in Brazil, a step he took in defiance of the court’s directives.
The legal tussle didn’t just impact X; it also had repercussions for another of Musk’s ventures, Starlink, a satellite internet provider. Justice de Moraes froze Starlink’s accounts in a decision that prompted Musk to label him a “dictator.” This clash was just one of many recent confrontations Musk has faced with various governments, including those in Australia and the UK, all aiming to combat the spread of misinformation online.
Why Brazil Matter for X?
With around 21.5 million users, Brazil ranks as X’s sixth-largest market globally. According to Thiago de Aragao, a senior researcher at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Musk’s strategy appears to have shifted. “He was afraid of losing market share and realized this was an unnecessary battle,” de Aragao noted.
In a final attempt so far, albeit short-lived, attempt to sidestep the ban, X utilized third-party cloud services to allow Brazilians access to the platform. However, this move quickly fell apart after de Moraes threatened hefty fines against the company.
Last week, X took a more conciliatory stance, appointing a local legal representative as required by the court. In a document submitted to the Brazilian Supreme Court, the company indicated it had blocked nine accounts that were under investigation for hate speech and misinformation.
“Backtracking is definitely one big positive development,” said Rubens Barbosa, a former Brazilian-ambassador to the United States. “Whether one accept it or not, the law must be respected, not defied.”
X is more prepared to follow guidelines
Sources close to Musk suggest that once X is reinstated in Brazil, his approach will be notably different. While he may still exhibit some combative tendencies, it seems he is prepared to respect local laws moving forward. “From now on, he will fight in the courts,” one insider revealed.
