In the 16th century, Amer Fort was constructed by Maan Singh, one of Akbar’s trusted generals. Over time, Maan Singh became the ruler of the surrounding area, which was then known as Amer State. Today, this grand structure is called Amer Fort, and the nearby city is now Jaipur. Located slightly outside Jaipur, Amer Fort is a significant attraction for visitors.

The fort is situated 11 km from Jaipur and is open for visitors from 9 AM to 6 PM. One of the key highlights is the elephant ride, which operates from 9:30 AM until 1 PM. In the evening, you can enjoy a light and sound show that begins at 7:30 PM in English, followed by a Hindi show at 8 PM.

Architectural Splendor of Amer Fort
The fort’s design boasts a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles, making it a remarkable architectural landmark. One prominent feature is the Diwan-e-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), where the king would address the people. The hall is beautifully adorned with mosaic glasswork and has a unique open-sided structure, supported by two rows of intricately decorated pillars.
Sukh Mandir: Another important structure is the Sukh Mandir, a space designed for relaxation. Made from sandalwood and ivory, it features a cooling system with water running through the hall to keep it cool. Despite its name, it is not a temple but a leisure area for the royal family.
Sheesh Mahal: The Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) is perhaps the most iconic section of Amer Fort. The walls and ceilings are intricately decorated with glasswork that reflects light, creating the illusion of a starry night when candles are lit. This palace was designed to fulfill a queen’s wish to sleep under the stars while still abiding by the customs that restricted women from sleeping outdoors.
Kesar Kyaari : The Kesar Kyaari is another remarkable feature of the fort, showcasing a Mughal-style garden located near Maota Lake. The star-shaped garden was once home to saffron plants, though now, other flowering plants fill the space due to climatic changes.
Light and Sound Show
The light and sound show held at the fort every evening brings to life the history of Amer Fort and Jaipur. It tells stories of the kings, their reigns, and ancient events through a captivating 50-minute visual display in both Hindi and English.
Exploring Amer Fort
Visitors typically enter through the Suraj Pol (Sun Gate) or Chand Pol (Moon Gate) depending on the route they take. Upon entry, you arrive at Jaleb Chowk, a large courtyard where tickets can be purchased. From here, you can visit the Siladevi Temple, famous for its silver doors, before moving on to the Hall of Public Audience.
Next, you’ll explore the Ganesh Gate leading to the Hall of Victory and the Sukh Niwas. The view of Maota Lake from the Jai Mandir (Victory Hall) is breathtaking. The fourth courtyard houses the queen’s quarters, including the magnificent Sheesh Mahal.
