Glover’s legacy is forever intertwined with Prince, having worked alongside him on several iconic projects, including the albums Sign o’ the Times and Lovesexy. She brought her incredible talent to his music videos, concert films, and tours, most notably delivering a memorable rap on the single “Alphabet St.”
Born on July 23, 1964, in Chicago, Cat was one of six siblings and began her dancing journey at just five years old. Her passion for dance quickly turned into a fervent dream to connect with Prince. In an interview with the Chicago Crusader, she recalled, “I first heard about Prince after his album, Dirty Mind. I was living on my own on the North Side of Chicago. The only thing that got me through my depression was listening to that album. I knew I had to meet him. That was me talking to my inner self.”
Cat Glover Big Break
Cat’s big break came when she appeared on the talent show Star Search, performing with a partner as the duo Pat and Cat. They wowed audiences, winning seven out of eight competitions and achieving two perfect scores, though they fell just short of the grand prize.
This exposure skyrocketed her career, leading to collaborations with artists like David Bowie. But it was her dream come true when Prince invited her to join his band in December 1986.
With Prince’s mentorship, Glover reached the pinnacle of her career, choreographing and dancing in the 1987 concert film Sign o’ the Times. She dazzled audiences on the Lovesexy Tour in 1988 and was the voice behind the rap on “Alphabet St.”
In 1989, she stepped away from Prince’s band to pursue her own musical path, releasing the EP Catwoman, which remains her sole musical project. In her later years, Glover continued to make waves in the dance world as a choreographer. She even had a brief reunion with Prince in 1994 on The Black Album, where she contributed the rap for “Cindy C.”
Cat Glover’s vibrant spirit and extraordinary talent have left an indelible mark on the music and dance communities. She will be deeply missed.
