Indian Entry for Oscar 2025 : Director Kiran Rao’s film “Lapata Ladies” was released in theaters this March and has impressed both critics and audiences alike. The film raises important questions about women’s identity in society while delivering a fun comedy, making it one of the most talked-about films of the year.
After watching the film, many people took to social media to suggest that “Lapata Ladies” should be sent as India’s entry for the Oscars this year. That demand has now been fulfilled.
“Lapata Ladies” in the Oscar Race
According to a PTI report, “Lapata Ladies,” one of this year’s sleeper hits, will officially represent India at the Oscars. A committee from the Film Federation of India selected it from a list of 29 films, which included titles like “Animal” and “Aattam,” as the official entry for the 2025 Oscars.
The film premiered last year at the Toronto Film Festival, where it received tremendous acclaim. Released in March 2024 on limited screens, it attracted a good audience. Reports indicate that the film, made on a budget of less than 5 crore rupees, has grossed over 25 crore rupees worldwide.
The performances of actors Nitanshi Goyal, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan have been widely praised. Kiran Rao’s direction has also received commendation for tackling sensitive topics related to women.
Will Aamir’s Dream Come True?
“Lapata Ladies” is produced by superstar Aamir Khan, with his ex-wife Kiran Rao as co-producer. This marks Aamir’s fourth film to be sent as an official Oscar entry from India. His first was “Lagaan,” released in 2001. Subsequent films like “Taare Zameen Par” and “Peepli Live” were also submitted for the Oscars. While “Lagaan” made it to the shortlist, the other two did not. Now, Aamir Khan Productions has another opportunity to have its film compete at the Oscars.
Ravi Kishan’s Excitement
Actor Ravi Kishan expressed his joy over “Lapata Ladies” being chosen as India’s official Oscar entry. He said, “For me, this feels like a dream come true. It’s the greatest honor, and I never imagined I would reach this point. This is the best and biggest news of my life. The film reflects India and beautifully showcases women’s empowerment.”
