On Tuesday, Brett Favre shared some heart-wrenching news: he’s been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The legendary quarterback delivered this announcement during a congressional hearing focused on federal welfare reform, a fitting backdrop given the challenges he’s faced.
“Unfortunately, I also lost an investment in a company that was developing a groundbreaking concussion drug I believed could help others,” the 54-year-old Hall of Famer said. “While it’s too late for me, this issue is incredibly important to my heart.”
Favre has been highly vocal about the probable toll of concussions throughout his NFL career, estimating he suffered “thousands” while playing. He even urged parents to hold off on letting their kids play tackle football until they’re at least 14. Just last month, he revealed that he sustained a head injury on his final match in the NFL.
During a 2022 interview on radio show “The Bubba Army” , Favre recollected on how concussions were treated in his era. “Concussions happen all the time. You get tackled, your head hits the turf, and you see flashes of light or hear ringing in your ears, but you just keep playing — that’s a concussion,” he explained.
Adding another layer to his story, Favre’s appearance at the hearing was connected to the Mississippi welfare scandal from 2020. Although he hasn’t been criminally charged, the state is suing 38 individuals and companies to recover $24 million of the $77 million in federal welfare funds involved.
Favre, who graciously helped fundraise for a University of Southern Mississippi athletic facility, has denied of knowing that a grant of $5 million he received came from a welfare fund.
