The highly anticipated Noida International Airport in Jewar, Greater Noida, is making significant strides toward its grand launch. With over 80 percent of the terminal building’s construction completed, the ambitious project is well on its way to becoming a key aviation hub in India.
Major Developments in Infrastructure
The airport’s construction, spearheaded with a budget of Rs 10,000 crore for its first phase, has seen remarkable progress. Flooring, escalator installation, and baggage handling systems are nearing completion, while the final touches on the terminal’s roof are currently underway, according to reports from the Hindustan Times.
Additionally, crucial infrastructure elements, including drinking water lines, sewage treatment plants, and water treatment facilities, are almost ready. Landside and airside developments have also been advancing at a steady pace. As per the latest updates:
- Landside work, which encompasses terminals, access roads, parking facilities, and public transport connections, is 79 percent complete.
- Airside work, covering runways, taxiways, and aprons, has reached 89 percent completion.
One of the most critical components, the air traffic control (ATC) tower, has been fully constructed, including its glass facade. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is now equipping the tower with advanced systems to ensure seamless air traffic management.
Regulatory Approvals and Readiness for Flight Operations
The airport’s concessionaire has already applied for an aerodrome license, a crucial step toward operational clearance. Following a successful validation flight conducted last December, authorities expect to receive the license by March, paving the way for full-fledged operations.
Inside the terminal, rapid finishing touches are being applied, including the installation of 10 aero bridges. Financially, the project has made substantial progress, with Rs 9,024 crore already spent out of the allocated Rs 10,056 crore. This investment includes:
- Rs 4,326 crore from the Uttar Pradesh government for land acquisition.
- Rs 5,730 crore for development, provided by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich AG.
Set to Welcome Millions of Passengers
Noida International Airport is scheduled to commence flight operations on April 17, 2025. Upon opening, the airport is expected to accommodate up to 12 million passengers annually in its first phase. However, expansion plans are already in motion, with a second phase set to include an MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) hub, additional runways, and more advanced aviation facilities.
The airport’s connectivity is another major highlight. An eight-lane road with cloverleaf interchanges, linking the Yamuna Expressway to the airport, has been completed. Additionally, a 750-meter stretch connecting the terminal to the airport’s entry point is under construction. This road is part of a 31-km expressway that will seamlessly connect the airport to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, ensuring smooth accessibility for passengers and cargo operations.
A Game-Changer for India’s Aviation Industry
With its cutting-edge infrastructure and strategic location, the Noida International Airport is set to transform air travel in the region. As India’s largest airport in terms of area, the project will significantly boost economic growth, create job opportunities, and improve international connectivity. The completion of the first phase marks a major milestone, bringing the vision of a world-class airport one step closer to reality.
As the countdown to its launch continues, the Noida International Airport stands as a testament to India’s expanding aviation prowess, promising a new era of connectivity and growth for travelers and businesses alike.
